Outi Pieski solo exhibition, Tate St Ives
Outi Pieski is a Sámi visual artist based in Ohcejohka (Utsjoki), Finland. This will be her first large-scale exhibition in the UK. Pieski’s paintings and installations explore several themes, including the culture and identity of the Sámi people – who live in the region of Sápmi, which now includes the northern part of Scandinavia and Kola peninsula in Russia.
In many of her projects, she incorporates duodji (the traditional craft practices of the Sámi people) using materials such as wood and textile. For Pieski, duodji is also a way of revitalising connections between past and future generations. Through this thought-provoking show, Pieski raises important questions around ancestral return, indigenous people’s rights, and the relationship between humans, animals and nature.

The Land Has a Mind to Speak – Sámi Horizon, MARKK, Hamburg
The artworks of Sissel M. Bergh, Annika Dahlsten & Markku Laakso, Marja Helander, Erica Huuva, Solveig Labba, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Outi Pieski, Katarina Pirak Sikku and Anniina Turunen, in dialogue with historical objects housed by the MARKK, initiate the overdue change of perspective on the past and present history of the Sámi. To this day, the Sámi are fighting for the recognition of their rights. The consequences of Nordic colonialism, which suppressed Sámi culture, language and traditions, can still be presently felt.
Thus, racism, re-education, human zoos, land grabbing and environmental destruction are the focus of the contemporary art positions in the exhibition. Sápmi, as the Sámi call their homeland, stretches across the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of the Russian Federation.

Speaking Back -Davi muitalusaid dekoloniseren / Decolonizing Nordic Narratives
Kunsthaus Hamburg
SPEAKING BACK is an art and research project that reflects upon colonialism in Europe’s North and its past and present entanglements with Germany. In the ongoing decolonization processes of German museums and other memory institutions, the Nordic colonialism and its devastating impacts on the Sámi and other minorities has not yet received enough attention. With art and scholarly perspectives, the project SPEAKING BACK focuses on this complex and ethically sensible field. SPEAKING BACK calls attention to the white supremacy ideology and racist structures that even today bias people’s minds and attitudes.
